Some children are ready for kindergarten at five. Others need a little more time to grow. Transitional Kindergarten isn’t about being behind—it’s about being right where your child needs to be. It’s an extra year to grow academically, socially, and spiritually before stepping into the bigger challenges of elementary school.
With our small Transitional Kindergarten class and caring Christian teachers at Oskaloosa Christian, your child gains confidence through gentle guidance, builds friendships through play, and discovers how fun learning can be. These years between preschool and kindergarten are a time for steady growth. Every step forward matters, and we make sure to celebrate it.
Learning happens best when it feels natural. Through hands-on activities, sensory exploration, and creative play, children develop the skills they'll need for future success while discovering God's goodness in the world around them.
Students master upper and lowercase letter identification, explore sounds through games and crafts, and develop book sense through stories. Beginning sounds, rhyming, and opposites become part of daily discoveries that build confident readers.
Numbers come alive through counting games and manipulatives. Children learn 1-20 counting, practice number writing 1-10, count to 100, and explore simple addition and subtraction. Shapes and measurements become part of their everyday vocabulary.
Our carefully designed learning centers bring new opportunities for exploration each day. From sensory tables filled with rice, water beads, and play-dough to fine motor activities with tweezers and building materials, children strengthen skills while having fun.
Learning comes alive through unit themes that connect to children's natural curiosity: family, pets, the five senses, farm animals, seasons, weather, plants, transportation, community helpers, and the life cycle of frogs. Each theme opens windows to wonder about God's creation.
Meeting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday gives children time to process and grow between school days while providing consistency and routine.
Weekly music, art, library, and PE classes expand learning beyond the classroom. Participating in Discipleship Groups brings together students across grade levels for Wednesday devotions and Friday Chapel. Fall Music Programs and Spring Musicals give children chances to shine.
Field trips to places like Autumn Acres with our kindergarten and first-grade students create lasting memories. Field Day brings the whole school together for fun. Age-appropriate service projects help children understand they can make a difference in our community.
